Ibadan is Nigeria's most stubbornly itself city: enormous — over three and a half million people — and structured around compounds, family networks and a university culture that sets it apart from Lagos's commercial frenzy. The University of Ibadan, Nigeria's oldest, has produced generations of academics, doctors and scientists who are now in London, Houston, Toronto and Johannesburg, and those alumni maintain real ties back to the city they graduated from.
