Ibadan is Nigeria's most stubbornly itself city: enormous — over three and a half million people — and structured around compounds, family networks and a university culture that sets it apart from Lagos's commercial frenzy. The University of Ibadan, Nigeria's oldest, has produced generations of academics, doctors and scientists who are now in London, Houston, Toronto and Johannesburg, and those alumni maintain real ties back to the city they graduated from. During weekdays, people are generally busy with work between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. However, evenings are often suitable for personal calls, as family time is highly valued. Asmara landlines can be cheaper to reach per minute than mobiles, and family members who live in the capital and have a fixed line are worth calling on that number.
