What to use for verification codes instead

We have no Vietnam number inventory at all, so there is no Vietnam number here that could receive a text. A US or UK number receives SMS verification codes from most services and works from anywhere in the world — you do not need to be in that country.

Canada, Australia, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Belgium, Brazil, Ireland, Lithuania, South Africa, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands also support SMS.

About Vietnam Mobile Numbers

Vietnamese mobile numbers are ten digits domestically and begin with 03, 05, 07, 08, or 09 — drop the leading zero and dial +84 followed by the nine remaining digits. The three dominant carriers, Viettel, MobiFone, and Vinaphone, each hold large chunks of the 03 and 09 ranges, but carrier-based guessing isn't necessary for a foreign caller. Landlines use city codes: Hanoi is 24, Ho Chi Minh City is 28. Both cities migrated to eight-digit local numbers in 2018, so any seven-digit Hanoi number in an old contact list needs a leading 3 inserted. For calling in, mobile is overwhelmingly where people answer, but businesses still maintain landlines as the published customer-facing number. One distinction worth noting: Zalo, a Vietnamese messaging app, carries more everyday communication than WhatsApp among locals, and a missed call often prompts a Zalo reply.

Timing and Cost Tips for Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang)

Vietnam is UTC+7 with no daylight saving, and the time rarely shifts relative to your own. From London, Vietnam is seven hours ahead; from New York, it's eleven or twelve depending on the season. Reaching someone at a Hanoi office in the morning means calling late the previous evening in Europe. The Tet holiday — Vietnamese Lunar New Year, typically falling between late January and mid-February — shuts down most of the country for a full week or more, with travel and family gatherings occupying everyone's time. Calls in the ten days before and after Tet also tend to go unanswered. Landline rates to Vietnamese fixed numbers are typically lower than mobile, and since many businesses keep Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi city numbers published for customer contact, using those for long calls can reduce cost meaningfully.
