Bulgarian mobile numbers announce themselves clearly: after the +359 country code you'll see 87, 88, or 89 as the next two digits for the main operators — A1 on 087, Telenor on 088, and Vivacom on 089. Landlines carry geographic area codes, and Sofia's is simply 2, so a Sofia fixed line looks like +359 2 followed by a seven-digit number. Other cities use two- or three-digit codes: Plovdiv is 32, Varna is 52, Burgas is 56. The distinction matters practically because mobiles cost more to reach per minute from abroad. Many Bulgarians, especially outside Sofia, still have a home landline or use the office fixed line for work calls, so asking a business contact for their office number rather than defaulting to mobile can save money on longer conversations.

Saving money on calls to Bulgaria
