Cameroonian numbers are eight digits long after the +237 country code. Mobile numbers from MTN start with 6 or 7; Orange Cameroon numbers also fall in the 6-range with distinct sub-prefixes. Nexttel numbers begin with 6 as well, so the first digit alone doesn't distinguish carriers, but it does confirm you're calling a mobile rather than a landline. Fixed lines — primarily in Yaoundé and Douala — begin with 2 for the capital region and 3 for Douala and the Littoral region. Landlines are an institutional layer: they appear on government ministry directories, major bank branches, and hotel reception desks, and are generally answered by a person during business hours. Personal contacts virtually always prefer mobile. The bilingual nature of the country means Douala and the Anglophone northwest and southwest regions operate partly in English, while Yaoundé and francophone areas default to French.
