Timing, cities and local context
Egyptian mobile numbers run ten digits locally and are identified by their first three digits: 010 is Vodafone, 011 is Etisalat (now e&), 012 is Orange, and 015 is WE. Strip the leading zero when dialing from abroad and you get a clean ten-digit number after +20. Landlines use two-digit area codes — 02 for Cairo and Giza, 03 for Alexandria, 040s and 060s for Delta and Sinai governorates. Cairo numbers are eight digits; most provincial landlines are seven. In practice, Egyptians overwhelmingly answer on mobile. The landline still shows up in corporate switchboards, government offices, hospitals, and university faculties, but personal contacts rarely cite a fixed line as their primary number. One cultural note: unknown international numbers often go to voicemail on Egyptian mobiles, not because the person is unavailable, but because screening unfamiliar calls — especially international ones — is common. A WhatsApp message before you call removes that friction immediately.
Egypt's weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, which catches many international callers off-guard. A Sunday-morning Cairo call, from a North American or European perspective, is perfectly timed — it's the start of Egypt's business week. Midweek, the window between 10 AM and 1 PM Egypt time (UTC+2, UTC+3 in summer) tends to find people at their desks before the heat of the afternoon slows things down. Landline calls to Cairo and Alexandria are cheaper than mobile calls, and since Egyptian businesses maintain landlines reliably, using them for planned calls is a practical saving.
